Argentario Promontory

The amazing Argentario promontory is surrounded by the sea and connected to the Tuscan coast by the Tombolo della Giannella and the Tombolo della Feniglia, forming, in the Orbetello lagoon. The coastline is almost entirely rocky with breathtaking cliffs overlooking the sea. Two welcoming marinas face the sea from Argentario: Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, ancient fishing villages.

We recommend traveling around the promontory. From Porto Santo Stefano, the first place where you meet Argentarola island, a tiny little island free of architectural structures, which has typical bushy clusters along the north shore. For scuba lovers, the Argentarola is famous for a cave which opens up 23 meters under the water’s surface.
Next we come upon Punta di Capo d’Uomo, the perfect habitat for sea bass and sea bream.
Continuing with the bow aimed at Porto Ercole we find Isola Rossa, which gets its name from the colors of the crags that characterize it. The limpid waters and abundant fauna render it an unforgettable, enjoyable place to stop.
Once past Punta Torre Ciana, you can dock at Punta Avvoltore to enjoy an alternative, marine picnic …

Along the route leading from Porto Santo Stefano to Porto Ercole, along the slopes of Monte Argentario, you can admire the many ramparts and fortresses which date back to the Sienese and Spanish dominations of XVI and XVII centuries. We are talking about 20 or so towers and fortresses built to guard the Argentario coasts against pirate attacks. This testifies as to the strategic importance that Argentario, located between the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, had, with its major trade routes, at that time.

The ramparts are partly open for visits, for further information, contact l’Ufficio Cultura del Comune di Monte Argentario +39 0564 831019

Sunset from the overlook of Porto Santo Stefano is not to be missed! We recommend following the directions for Cala Grande or Cala Piccola from which you can enjoy breath-taking sunsets!
